VITAL – Versatile Internet of Things for AgricuLture

The project is co-funded by Greece and the European Union with project ID: Τ1ΕΔΚ-02296

The Vital project aims to create an innovative system that exploits the Internet of Things (IoT) technology in applications requiring low installation, use and maintenance costs while allowing for the interconnection and integration of a large number of different types of devices, covering a range of up to 1 km radius (capable of covering larger areas with increased power consumption).
Within the context of the project, local wireless electronic device layouts for the measurement of production conditions and wireless slaves will build, which will be able to be integrated into old sensor types (Agricultural Sensors, Meters & actuators), converting them into “smart sensors”. Smart sensors will be wirelessly connected and will send data to a central data server (IOT Gateway) that will be built for that purpose. The IoT Gateway will in turn send the data over the Internet to the central Cloud Database, which collects all data using special IoT communication protocols. Data management for service generation will be performed using the Microsoft Azure IoT Cloud Platform.
In addition, the proposed system will be used in two different pilot applications, highlighting the comparative advantages offered by IoT to them. The goal is thus to achieve a total of Technology Readiness Level 7, with the demonstration of the original system in an operational environment.
